Topic: Show Me Your Friend!
Text: Proverbs 13:18-25 (KJV)
18 Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.
19 The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.
20 He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.
21 Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.
22 A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just.
23 Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment.
24 He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
25 The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.
Key Verse: “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed” (Proverbs 13:20).
MESSAGE:
A proverb says, “Birds of a feather flock together.” In the Cold War era, various organisations formed to show alliance with one country or the other. The international movement called Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was founded by a set of leaders from five countries who did not want to align with either the United States of America or the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR). Many other organisations have been constituted in view of keeping ties with like-minded countries.
Today, individuals and groups are forming alliances to achieve certain purposes. While some of these organisations pursue positive agendas to further the cause of human development and progress, some others are for destructive reasons. They thus fit into the description in our text as “companions of fools”.
In life, not all associations are beneficial. We must ensure we do not go into alliance with anyone who could influence us negatively. Lives have been destroyed, dreams shattered and destinies ruined by simply going into associations with strange characters. Some firebrand believers in the past have brought ruin to themselves by straying and becoming companions of fools. They left the fold of God; now, they are deluded and walk in the path of destruction.
Parents should learn to discipline their children. This will help them in the choice of friends they make and save them from avoidable ruin.
Thought For The Day: A man learns better by association with wiser people.

1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
