DCLM Higher Everyday 17 January 2024 — Guess who is alone with God
DCLM Higher Everyday 17 January 2024 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Guess who is alone with God
Topic: Guess who is alone with God
Text: Genesis 32:22-32
22And he rose up that night, and took his two wives, and his two womenservants, and his eleven sons, and passed over the ford Jabbok.
23And he took them, and sent them over the brook, and sent over that he had.
24And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.
25And when he saw that he prevailed not against him, he touched the hollow of his thigh; and the hollow of Jacob’s thigh was out of joint, as he wrestled with him.
26And he said, Let me go, for the day breaketh. And he said, I will not let thee go, except thou bless me.
27And he said unto him, What is thy name? And he said, Jacob.
28And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.
29And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
30And Jacob called the name of the place Peniel: for I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.
31And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him, and he halted upon his thigh.
32Therefore the children of Israel eat not of the sinew which shrank, which is upon the hollow of the thigh, unto this day: because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.
Memory Verse: “And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day” (Genesis 32:24).
Message
To be alone with God means to separate yourself from all to pray to God. Leonard Ravenhill asserts that, “No man is greater than his prayer life. The pastor who is not praying is playing; the people who are not praying are straying. We have many organizers, but few agonizers; many players and payers, few prayers; many singers, few clingers; lots of pastors, few wrestlers; many fears, few tears; much fashion, little passion; many interferers, few intercessors; many writers, but few fighters. Failing here, we fail everywhere.” In this world of tests, trials, tribulations, and perils, the only guaranteed place of comfort and hope is God’s presence. Jacob’s situation as described in our text was dreadful but he chose to be alone with God and the result was unquantifiable victory, joy and peace.

Many saints practised the act of being alone with God in Bible days. They include: Abraham, Jacob, Hannah, Jabez and of course, our Lord Jesus Christ (Mark 1:35). However, sin makes our prayers go unanswered. The solution is repentance and holy living.
QUOTE: He chose to be alone with God.
PRAYER: Lord, give me grace to seek your face.
CHALLENGE: Be a disciple alone with God.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
