DCLM Higher Everyday 24 January 2024 — A City On A Hill

DCLM Higher Everyday 24 January 2024 Devotional by Pastor W. F. KumuyiA City On A Hill

Topic: A City On A Hill

Text: Matthew 5:14-16

14Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Key Verse: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16)

Message

Close to a major road in an African country, a village sat fair and square on a hill. Its lights shone brightly cascading down the hill and brightening the valley dwellers. As long as the lights shone in this little village, every passer-by praised the arty wisdom of the builder. Some called him a master builder and wanted him to help them build their cities as well.

Like this village on the hill, Jesus teaches that we are the light of the world. The whole world lies in darkness. True Christians are the only lights this present world has. If we refuse to shine by preaching and doing good works, we deprive the world of the beauty that the life of Christ exudes. Anytime we sin, we make an already dark world much darker. Too bad! As a city that is on a hill cannot be hidden, so should we not also hide our good works made possible by our salvation in Christ. Friend, shine by preaching the gospel and doing good deeds, no matter how hard things get.

Quote: O God, help me to be a light wherever I go, in Jesus’ name.

Challenge: Let the world see by your light.

Prayer for today: Shine by preaching the gospel.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
