DCLM Higher Everyday 11 February 2024 — Tight Control On The Tongue

DCLM Higher Everyday 11 February 2024 Devotional by Pastor W. F. KumuyiTight Control On The Tongue

Topic: Tight Control On The Tongue

Text: Psalm 141:1-4

1(A Psalm of David.) LORD, I cry unto thee: make haste unto me; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee.

2Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

3Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.

4Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked works with men that work iniquity: and let me not eat of their dainties.

5Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities.

Key Verse: “Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips” (Psalm 141:3).

Message

A major conflict in the book of Judges was triggered by the misuse of the tongue. Ironically, the outcome was also decided by the use of the tongue. The men of Ephraim used insulting words, to provoke the people of Gilead and spark a war. Unfortunately the Ephraimites spoke a dialect that pronounced a particular word differently, and that was their identifier when the battle turned against them and they tried to escape from slaughter. Forty two thousands of them died in the battle (Judges 12:1-6).

A wise man said, “The tongue has no bones but is strong enough to break a heart. So be careful with your words.” The tongue can do so much damage that God barred it in with thirty two teeth and a two-leaved door (the lips). Yet it often escapes and wreaks havoc on humanity. An uncontrolled tongue speaks words of slander, lies, cursing, and unkind criticism. These leave the victim with emotional scars that can take time to heal. So, if you do not have anything good to say, say nothing at all.

Quote: The tongue can do so much damage.

Challenge: Will your tongue hurt or heal, build or break?

Prayer for today: Set a watch over my lips, dear Lord.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
