DCLM Higher Everyday 17 February 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — The Purpose of Passover
Topic: The Purpose of Passover
Text: Exodus 12:21-26
21Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.
23For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.
24And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.
25And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service.
26And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service?
Key Verse: “For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you” (Exodus 12:23).
Message
The Passover was instituted by God for the children of Israel to commemorate their departure from Egypt when God spared the firstborns of Israel and smote all the firstborns of the Egyptians, both human and beasts. The children of Israel were to observe the Passover throughout their generations.

In the reading text, we discover that God asked the children of Israel to strike the blood of animal on their lintels. The sign was to allow the destroying angel to spare their families from death, sorrow and judgement on seeing the blood which represents life. Today, only the blood of Jesus can save and deliver from God’s judgement of sin. Only the shed blood of Jesus has the guarantee of safety for mankind. “For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.” Ask Jesus to cleanse you of all sins with His atoning blood. Surrender your life to Him. It’s then you can be preserved from the destroyer and the impending judgement of God on all sinners…
Quote: Only the blood of Jesus can save
Challenge: With the blood of Jesus, you can be redeemed.
Prayer for today: Lord Jesus, let Your precious blood wash me from all sins.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
