DCLM Higher Everyday 25 May 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Exam Success 2: Reading Skills
Topic: Exam Success 2: Reading Skills
Text: Acts 8:27-35
27And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
28Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
29Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.
30And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
31And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
32The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
33In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
34And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
35Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
Key Verse: “And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him” (Acts 8: 30-31).
Message
Do you ever wonder why you read and do not understand? You read, but your reading is not effective. This is because your study habit is not good enough. Just simply reading and re-reading your notebooks and even textbooks is not good enough. Today’s text is a proof that though we can read and write, understanding is another ability on a different level entirely. Your memory needs to be activated; make connections with concepts or topics you are reading; draw examples and use symbols related to the topics; figure out the answers to the problems you are trying to solve; try to memorize and master concepts; try to rewrite the points without looking at the note; and use questions to check-list what you have studied.

You too can attract God’s divine wisdom like Daniel and his three friends in Babylon, if you seek help from His inexhaustible source. He gives to all men liberally. When God answers, you will become smarter and filled with wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Only God’s children can ask Him for gifts. Are you already His child?
Quote: Your memory needs to be activated
Challenge: Get wisdom, get understanding, from God.
Prayer for today: Grant me divine understanding, oh God!
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
