DCLM Higher Everyday 20 June 2025 — Result of Covetousness – PART 1
DCLM Higher Everyday 20 June 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Zest For Zenith – Part 2
TOPIC: Result of Covetousness – PART 1
TEXT: 1 Kings 21:1-7
1And it came to pass after these things, that Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.
3And Naboth said to Ahab, The LORD forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.
4And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.
5But Jezebel his wife came to him, and said unto him, Why is thy spirit so sad, that thou eatest no bread?
6And he said unto her, Because I spake unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and said unto him, Give me thy vineyard for money; or else, if it please thee, I will give thee another vineyard for it: and he answered, I will not give thee my vineyard.
7And Jezebel his wife said unto him, Dost thou now govern the kingdom of Israel? arise, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.
MEMORY VERSE: “And Ahab came into his house heavy and displeased because of the word which Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had said, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers…” (1 Kings 21:4).
MESSAGE
According to Merriam-Webster, a person who is covetous is “marked by inordinate desire for wealth or possessions or for another’s possessions.” This definition alone tells you why the sin of covetousness is so dangerous. When this sin grabs hold of you, it can create in you an insatiable desire to have the things that other people have.

As human beings, we have within us the potential of falling victim to the sin of covetousness. That is why God decided to address the issue by making it a commandment. The Scripture says, “Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour’s wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour’s” (Exodus 20:17). We are told that King Ahab coveted the vineyard of his neighbour, Naboth but when he could not succeed in getting it, he became devastated and even refused to eat. Unfortunately, in today’s social media-driven world dominated by young people, covetousness is even easier to indulge in and more prevalent than ever before. Always be satisfied with what you have.
QUOTE: Be satisfied with what you have.
PRAYER: O God, rid me of the covetous spirit.
CHALLENGE: Covetousness is a sin.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
