Text: Genesis 8:8-12
8Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;
10And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;
11And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.
12And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.
Key Verse: “And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.” Genesis 8:11
Message
Doves are peaceful birds known for their gentle look, soft, cooing sounds and graceful flight. They are closely related to pigeons and belong to the family of Columbidae. Doves come in various species typically with slender bodies, small heads and pointed wings. They are often grey or white, though some species have more bright colours like pink or brown, they are lovely birds to observe and enjoy.

The dove holds significant meaning in the Bible, symbolizing various qualities such as peace, purity, and the presence of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, the dove is mentioned in Genesis 8:8-12, when Noah sent out a dove after the flood and it returned with an olive branch, signifying the end of God’s judgment. In the New Testament, the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in the form of a dove, as recorded in Matthew 3:16, Mark 1:10, and Luke 3:22. This event marked the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry and the confirmation of His identity as the Son of God. The dove is also associated with peace, as Jesus instructed His disciples to be “wise as serpents and harmless as doves” (Matthew 10:16). This implies the call to maintain a peaceful and gentle nature while travelling through a world filled with challenges and opposition.
The dove represents purity, as mentioned in Song of Solomon 5:2, where the bride is described as “my dove, my perfect one.” This signifies the spotless and undefiled nature of believers in Christ. Are you pure in heart?
Prayer for today: Lord, make me to be gentle and peaceful like the dove.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
