DCLM Higher Everyday 2 October 2025 — Asking Amiss -1
DCLM Higher Everyday 2 October 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Asking Amiss -1
Topic: Asking Amiss -1
Text: 1Kings2:13-18
13And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.
14He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on.
15And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and that all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the LORD.
16And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.
17And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
18And Bathsheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king.
Key Verse: “And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on. And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say nay to thee,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife” (I Kings 2:16-17).
Message
Asking amiss is an act of praying with inappropriate requests or improper motives. We can learn a great lesson from the manner Adonijah placed his petition before the King’s mother. Our memory verse shows him equating himself with the King and even claiming he was the people’s favourite to be King. He almost implied that God robbed him of what was rightfully his! What an aberration! He was full of himself and pride. He showed no reverence to the King or to his mother in laying claim to a throne that was never his. Adonijah sought the throne desperately and subtly requested to marry Abishag, his late father’s concubine with the aim of gaining political power, and not for genuine marriage.
God searches the heart and knows the intent for every request we make. Our requests must be made out of a pure and undefiled heart in agreement with the revealed word of God. Finally, we must ask in faith and be in right standing with God. Youths not born again will be asking amiss as their hearts are not right with God.

Challenge: God only answers prayers in accordance with His will.
Prayer for today: Oh God, help me to always pray in line with your will.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
