DCLM Higher Everyday 31 October 2025 — Top Position Seekers
DCLM Higher Everyday 31 October 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Top Position Seekers
Topic: Top Position Seekers
Text: Matthew 20:20-28
20Then came to him the mother of Zebedee’s children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.
22But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
23And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
24And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.
25But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
26But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
27And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
28Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
Key Verse: “But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister” (Matthew 20:26).
Message
“Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge,” submitted Simon Sinek. In a world fixated on titles, positions, and power as indices of success, it’s easy to become entangled in the relentless pursuit of ascending the societal ladder to reach the perceived “top.” However, as followers of Christ, our approach to ambition, achievement, and leadership must be grounded in the principles vastly different from the world’s standards. Jesus reframes our understanding of leadership by making us know that true greatness isn’t about how many people serve you, but about how many people you serve.

Dear young leaders, as you aspire to climb the ladders of your schools, universities, workplaces, and communities, remember that the worthwhile ladder is the one leading downward into the heart of service. Seek positions where you can serve many, influence positively, and reflect Christ’s love. Let your ambition be fueled by love and your leadership success measured by the lives you impact. May your pursuit of top positions be a journey marked by humility, service, and love.
Quote: Let your ambition be fueled by love
Challenge: Be a servant leader.
Prayer for today: Lord, help me to have the heart of a servant like Christ.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
