Topic: Consider Others First

Text: Genesis 13:1-9

1And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.

2And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

3And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai;

4Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

5And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

6And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.

7And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

8And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

9Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

Key Verse: “Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.” Genesis 13:9

Message

God had blessed Abraham with many sheep, goats and cattle. Lot also had some flocks and herds. They had so many animals that there was not enough land for all of them and Lot’s shepherds started quarrelling with Abraham’s shepherds. Then Abraham let Lot choose the land that he wanted. When Lot saw the fertile valley of Jordan, he chose to move there, while Abraham stayed in Canaan.

Maybe you are wondering and asking should one always let others choose first? For example, if you were given two slices of cake to share with a friend, would you let your friend choose a slice first, or would you take the bigger and hand the other to your friend? Abraham could have decided which part of the land he wanted. But instead, he trusted God to bless him, no matter which part of the land Lot would choose. If you have something to share, you have the right to give what you want and keep what you want. Remember though, that the Lord loves a giving heart because He Himself is generous – He loves to pour out His blessing on us. Even though we seem to lose out by letting someone else choose the best, we will always end up with a far greater reward from God.

Prayer for today: Father, please give me the courage to always consider others first.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
