DCLM Higher Everyday 9 May 2026 — A Lily In The Mire
Topic: A Lily In The Mire
Bible Reading: 1 Samuel 3:1-4, 19-21 (KJV)
1And the child Samuel ministered unto the LORD before Eli. And the word of the LORD was precious in those days; there was no open vision.
3And ere the lamp of God went out in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was, and Samuel was laid down to sleep;
4That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
19And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground.
20And all Israel from Dan even to Beersheba knew that Samuel was established to be a prophet of the LORD.
21And the LORD appeared again in Shiloh: for the LORD revealed himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the LORD.
MEMORY VERSE: “And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground” (1 Samuel 3:19).
Message
Someone wrote that, “You can’t control the wind, but you can adjust your sails.” In the light of today’s study, this implies that you may not be able to control the negative influences around you but you can discipline yourself not to be influenced by them. “A lily in the mire” means a beautiful or pure thing existing in a dirty environment, essentially representing someone or something maintaining positive qualities despite being surrounded by negativity. A Lily symbolises purity and beauty, while “mire” represents mud or something defiling. The life of Samuel was characterized by purity, despite being surrounded by bad influencers; even the immoral lifestyle of Eli’s children did not affect his holy walk with God. They were not his role models. Live as a lily in the mire to shine in heaven.
Many around us are young people propelled by immoral passions, fraudulent activities, the get-rich-quick syndrome, etc. yet, God wants us to live as a lily in the mire. Those who allow Christ into their lives through genuine repentance and heart circumcision can shine in this corrupt world.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Help me Lord, to maintain my integrity.
CHALLENGE
Let your light so shine.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
