Topic: No Unconditional Eternal Security
Bible Reading: John 8:31-36 (KJV)
31Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
KEY VERSE: Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed” (John 8:31).
Message
The doctrine of “eternal security” or “once saved, forever saved” can be misleading. While 2 Corinthians 5:17 assures us that in Christ, we become new creations, old things have passed away and all things are become new; this transformation requires our intentional cooperation. As believers, we are expected to abide in Christ, living out daily our new-found life (John 15:4-6). Abiding in Christ involves walking in obedience to God’s word and remaining faithful to the end. Refusing to abide in Christ and reverting to our old, sinful lifestyle will have eternal consequences. Let us take heed, obey God’s word, and persevere in our faith, that we may inherit the kingdom of God.
Friend, there is no unconditional eternal security. Judas Iscariot, who betrayed his Master, and Demas, who left Apostle Paul, his partner in ministry for the world, and was nowhere said to have been restored, could not have gone to heaven either. The Scripture says, “But we are not of them who draw back to perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul” (Hebrews 10:39).
Lord Jesus, help me to keep following You to the end.
Don’t go back to the world.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
