TOPIC: FOUNDATION OF FREEDOM
TEXT: JOHN 8:31-36
32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
33They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?
34Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.
35And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.
36If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.
MEMORY VERSE: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free” (JOHN 8:32).
MESSAGE:
The English poet and hymn writer, William Cowper wrote, “He is the freeman whom the truth makes free, and all are slaves beside.” Every human being is born a sinner, a slave to sin. The only way to know the truth is to obey the true gospel as declared in the Bible. Knowing the truth sets us free from the bondage of sin, the yoke of Satan, and eternal death.
God’s truth gives freedom from the guilt of sin and fear of judgment of God. The Gospel truth breaks the band of misery and destroys and dispels the works of darkness. Truth releases one from ignorance, superstition, and evil passions. Jesus prayed for the disciples, “Sanctify them through thy truth, thy word is truth.”
At salvation, a sinner is set free from outward sin. Believing the truth on sanctification provides the believer the opportunity to pray for freedom from inward corruption and the propensity to do evil. Anyone who turns down the truth will remain in bondage to sin and Satan. Come to Jesus, the Fountain of all truth, for independence from Satan.
QUOTE: God’s truth gives freedom.
CHALLENGE: Those who reject the truth abide in bondage.
PRAYER: Father, help me never to deviate from the truth.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
