Text: 1 Peter 2:9-11
9But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
11Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul;
Key Verse: “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light” (1 Peter 2:9).
Message
According to a Christian minister, “God’s people are peculiar. Their spirit cannot mingle with the spirit and influence of the world. You do not wish to bear the Christian name and yet be unworthy of it.” Christians are peculiar people because they are saved by God for them to show forth His glory. Those who are godly like Joseph in Egypt who faced the challenge of defiling himself with his master’s wife would not yield to the temptation of sinning against God. “How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” said Joseph when his master’s wife wanted to defile him. You should endeavor to abstain from all forms of lust to retain your peculiarity as a child of God’s kingdom.
Remember the devil is still enticing people with the aim of trapping their souls in eternal doom. Like the peculiar Joseph, flee objects of temptation when the need arises and do not allow sinful emotions to rule and ruin you. Remember who you are – a royal priest, a chosen person, and a peculiar person!
Quote: Retain your peculiarity
Challenge: Flee and overcome lust in this lustful generation.
Prayer for today: Lord, help me to be peculiar.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
