Topic: A Pharisee Or A Publican

Bible Reading: Luke 18:10-14 (KJV)

10Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.

11The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.

12I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess.

13And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner.

14I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.

Message

Two men went up to pray as seen in our Bible passage; one a Pharisee and the other a publican. The Pharisee came in with a lot of justification, self-righteousness and condemnation on another worshipper. He had no prayer request; he just came into the presence of God for show. This is so sad!

On the other hand, the publican who was seen as a sinner by the Pharisee, came with all humility before God. He stood afar off showing that he acknowledges his sin before the most high God. He came with a request of mercy from the throne of grace. Our God Who never turns anyone away heard his prayers and had mercy on him.

Many times when we come to worship God. Some of us behave like the Pharisee – no focus. When the word of God is being read or preached, some are given to distracting others, others during prayer times will be busy looking around to spy on those they think are not behaving well. It is time to repent like the publican and focus on things that have eternal value. Get rid of all distractions and approach God’s presence with humility and reverence at all times.

PRAYER FOR TODAY

Dear Father, please have mercy on me and deliver me from self-righteousness and pride.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)

4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
