TOPIC: ARE YOU LIVING IN THE LIGHT?
TEXT: 1 JOHN 2:7-11
7 Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning.
9 He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now.
10 He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and walketh in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
MEMORY VERSE: “He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now” (1 JOHN 2:9).
MESSAGE
The world is having its trial by fire. The pandemic, insecurity and disruption of previously held beliefs, have plunged the nations into deeper darkness and gloom. These are the days of fake news, hate speech and conspiracy theories. Iniquities abound in the society, and the wicked are held in high esteem. Men are lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God. Never had the need and urgency of illumination been greater than now.
Jesus proclaimed himself as the light of the world. He further declared that His disciples were the light of the world. Christian youths are the light of the world. Stars shine brightest in the dark night. Nothing exposes a white spot better than a dark background. Similarly, Christians should love and not hate the brethren. Hatred is darkness or sin. Rather, they are to “walk as children of light.” Having had their nature and character transformed by the Lord, they are to “cast off the works of darkness, and…put on the armour of light” (Romans 13:12b). Are you living in the light?
QUOTE: Christian youths are the light of the world.
CHALLENGE: There is urgent need for illumination now.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to live in the light.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
