DCLM Sincere Milk 17 April 2025 — Avoid Proud Talk

DCLM Sincere Milk 17 April 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. KumuyiAvoid Proud Talk

Topic: Avoid Proud Talk

Text: 1 Samuel 2:1-8

1And Hannah prayed, and said, My heart rejoiceth in the LORD, mine horn is exalted in the LORD: my mouth is enlarged over mine enemies; because I rejoice in thy salvation.

2There is none holy as the LORD: for there is none beside thee: neither is there any rock like our God.

3Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

4The bows of the mighty men are broken, and they that stumbled are girded with strength.

5They that were full have hired out themselves for bread; and they that were hungry ceased: so that the barren hath born seven; and she that hath many children is waxed feeble.

6The LORD killeth, and maketh alive: he bringeth down to the grave, and bringeth up.

7The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.

8He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.

Key Verse: “Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: …” 1 Samuel 2:3a

Message

Hannah’s prayer, though a prayer to praise the Lord for His salvation, His holiness and His greatness, contains a part that is a warning to those who talk proudly. This is because the Lord is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed. The Lord knows the real reason why people say what they say and what their plans are. People have many reasons for talking proudly.

Firstly, it may be because they think they have enough and there is no lack in their lives. Secondly, they may think they are better than others and should be adored. Thirdly, they think they know better than others and should be listened to. Fourthly, it may be an attempt to exalt self rather than God. No matter the reason, proud talk is a sin before God. Some children talk proudly about their families, their wealth, their wisdom, appearance, the school they attend, the tribe they come from and even the church where they worship. Pride goes together with arrogance – that feeling that makes you act superior or better than others.

Humble yourself before the Lord. Watch and be careful what you say. Understand that whatever you have has been given to you by God in His mercy. Proud talk or a boastful spirit will lead you into trouble and shame. Avoid it.

Prayer for today: Lord, teach me to be quiet and meek in words and in actions.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
