DCLM Higher Everyday 30 July 2023 — Being Lukewarm Is Bad
DCLM Higher Everyday 30 July 2023 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Being Lukewarm Is Bad
Topic: Being Lukewarm Is Bad.
Text: Revelation 3: 14-19
15I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot.
16So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.
17Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:
18I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.
19As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.
Key Verse: “So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I spue thee out of my mouth” (Revelation 3: 16).
Message
The spiritual condition of the Laodicean Church was distasteful to the Lord because they were Lukewarm- neither cold nor hot. So, to be spiritually lukewarm is to be in a state of indifference and casual about spiritual matters. When this happens pride, ignorance, self-sufficiency, and complacency set in. This depicts the spiritual condition of many Christian youth today. God is not happy with Christians who are in the same spiritual state with the Laodicean brethren. The result of spiritual diagnosis performed by the Lord on the lukewarm state of the Laodicean Church showed that they were, “wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked.” It was indeed a dangerous spiritual condition!
However, the loving Shepherd did not shut the door against the Laodicean brethren but called them to repentance and spiritual re-awakening. “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.” Being lukewarm may indicate that you are too close to the world, or that some things are occupying your heart that chokes your spiritual life. The Lord wants you to repent, and do the first things.
Quote: The Lord wants you to repent.
Challenge: Repent and be zealous.
Prayer for today: Lord, help me to be spiritually awake.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
