Message
Someone is said to be poor if he or she lacks the means to satisfy his or her basic needs. As at 2018, it is estimated that a single country in West Africa, has 86 million people living in extreme poverty. (Google). Nobody likes to be poor: with no good house to live in, not enough food to eat, no good clothes to wear and no money to pay his bills. Life won’t be easy at all. Some people are even ashamed to identify with the poor. Nations of the world are doing all they can to either reduce or eliminate poverty.

However, in our Bible passage, the Lord Jesus proposes blessing for the poor. There is a type of poverty therefore that brings blessing; that is, being poor in the Spirit. To be poor in Spirit means to realize that you have nothing at all that you can give to God in exchange for your soul. There is nothing you have on earth that God can accept as the price for the deliverance of your soul from hell. The richest person on earth does not have enough to redeem his own soul alone.
The poor in Spirit is humble and simple-minded. He is lowly in his sight and possesses a sense of guilt for his sins and wickedness. Your sense of guilt and helplessness must cause you to turn to the Saviour Who alone is rich enough to pay the price for your forgiveness and salvation.

Prayer for today: Lord, nothing in my hand I bring, may Your sacrifice on the cross pay the price for my sins.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
