Topic: Do As The Romans Do?
Text: Romans 12: 1-3
2And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
3For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.
Key Verse: “And be not conformed to this world; but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2).
Message
According to an age long saying, “When in Rome do as the Romans Do.” This saying dates back to the 14th century. The phrase simply means adapting yourself to the customs or situation of the people in a certain place and behaving like they do. However, such submission contradicts God’s word, which insists on holiness and righteousness as revealed strictly in scriptures. Thus, any practice or principle which does not align with the Bible must be rejected as a doctrine of men and of the devil. The Bible expressly says, ” Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).
According to our text, we are not to be conformed to this world; instead, we should allow God’s word to transform us and renew our minds so that we will only do what is God’s perfect will. Beloved, allow the Holy Spirit through God’s word to transform your life today, so that you can also be an agent of change bringing sinners to the Lord.
Quote: Be an agent of change
Challenge: A Christian does not flow with the tide.
Prayer for today: Lord, make me an agent of change.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
