DCLM Higher Everyday 1 July 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — God Answers Prayers
Topic: God Answers Prayers
Text: Psalms 91:14-16
14Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
16With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
Key Verse: “He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him” (Psalms 91:15).
Message
In Christian assemblies globally, the hymn, “What a Friend We Have in Jesus,” is sung often. Sing with me the first part of the first stanza:
What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear,
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer.
The preacher, Joseph M. Scriven wrote the hymn in 1855 with the goal of comforting his ill Irish mother while in Canada. He had no idea his sincere work would be a source of comfort and inspiration for future generations. The hymn is a reminder that prayer is still a powerful and effective form of connection with God.

Psalm 91:14-16 reaffirms God’s promises of rescue, protection, answered prayers, divine presence, deliverance, honour, and a fulfilled life. It emphasises the timeless reality that God has not abandoned us. The message is clear: we are urged to pray to God for everything and honour Him in our daily lives. Prayer can cause revolutionary changes, avert dangers, uplift, strengthen, and bring about the good life.
Quote: Prayer can cause revolutionary changes
Challenge: Pray more earnestly in faith – God answers prayers.
Prayer for today: Thank you Lord, for the assurance that you answer prayers.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
