TOPIC: JUST LIKE JESUS

TEXT: JOSHUA 19:40-51

40 And the seventh lot came out for the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families.

41 And the coast of their inheritance was Zorah, and Eshtaol, and Irshemesh,

42 And Shaalabbin, and Ajalon, and Jethlah,

43 And Elon, and Thimnathah, and Ekron,

44 And Eltekeh, and Gibbethon, and Baalath,

45 And Jehud, and Beneberak, and Gathrimmon,

46 And Mejarkon, and Rakkon, with the border before Japho.

47 And the coast of the children of Dan went out too little for them: therefore the children of Dan went up to fight against Leshem, and took it, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and possessed it, and dwelt therein, and called Leshem, Dan, after the name of Dan their father.

48 This is the inheritance of the tribe of the children of Dan according to their families, these cities with their villages.

49 When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them:

50 According to the word of the LORD they gave him the city which he asked, even Timnathserah in mount Ephraim: and he built the city, and dwelt therein.

51 These are the inheritances, which Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun, and the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel, divided for an inheritance by lot in Shiloh before the LORD, at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. So they made an end of dividing the country.

KEY VERSE: “When they had made an end of dividing the land for inheritance by their coasts, the children of Israel gave an inheritance to Joshua the son of Nun among them” (JOSHUA 19:49).

MESSAGE:

The new leader of a country was taking over during a most difficult time in the long history of his nation. His predecessor had left a battered legacy that had desecrated the office, which had made many to wonder if the country would ever regain the global honour bequeathed it over the decades. The helmsman realised his own integrity was also at stake. So, he spoke touchingly to his countrymen and women: he would be guided by the power of example and not by the example of power.

Joshua possessed such gifted carriage that made him serve the Lord so selflessly. In spite of his position, he was not tempted to grab any choice plot when dividing the land among the tribes. He ensured that others were first served, according to the way the Lord wanted it. Finally, the Almighty God showed His own faithfulness by telling the Israelites to reward Joshua with a portion of land. There is power in generous leadership in ministry that challenges God to bless His servants.

Many Christians today claim that they are entitled to first place when it comes to material benefits. They turn the Scriptures upside down as they insist that they must drink of the milk of the flock. They forget that a leader is expected to give and serve selflessly as Jesus and His apostles did.

In the early church, the heathen clearly saw the exemplary lives of the disciples that led to them being called ‘Christians’ (little Christs) as they noticed no dissimilarities between their comportment and that of their Master. Like Christ, they were not after power, fame or worldly authority. They served faithfully and received His reward in due time.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: God rewards His ministers who serve themselves last.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR: GENESIS 32-34

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
