DCLM Higher Everyday 10 March 2024 — My Eyes: Not For Vanity
Topic: My Eyes: Not For Vanity
Text: Psalm 119:33-38
33HE. Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end.
34Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
35Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.
36Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, and not to covetousness.
37Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way.
38Stablish thy word unto thy servant, who is devoted to thy fear.
Key Verse: “Turn away mine eyes from beholding vanity; and quicken thou me in thy way” (Psalm 119:37).
Message
The lust for vanity, like the love of money, is the real root of a perverse society. Young persons from mostly Africa and Asia are now victims of modern slavery. They are trafficked across the developed world. A former president of America, Barrack Obama, expressed his worries on this on September 25, 2012 in the following words, “It ought to concern every person, because it is a debasement of our common humanity…it endangers public health and fuels violence and organized crime … I’m talking about the injustice, the outrage, of human trafficking which must be called by its true name – Modern slavery.” A route to this great evil is the eyes. Images or videos on the television, internet, the social media and magazines, fuel the youthful lust for pleasures of the flesh and the get-rich-quick syndrome.
The only way out of the danger of enticement to vanity is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and hard work. Friend, don’t lose your soul for vanity. Be contented with what you have and obey God’s Word.
Quote: Don’t lose your soul for vanity
Challenge: Lean on Jesus for a better future.
Prayer for today: Remove vanity from my heart, oh Lord.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
