DCLM Sincere Milk  19 September 2024 Devotional by Pastor W. F. KumuyiNo To Sin And Yes To Jesus

Topic: No To Sin And Yes To Jesus

Text: Jeremiah 35:1-10

1The word which came unto Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah king of Judah, saying,

2Go unto the house of the Rechabites, and speak unto them, and bring them into the house of the LORD, into one of the chambers, and give them wine to drink.

3Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, the son of Habaziniah, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites;

4And I brought them into the house of the LORD, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan, the son of Igdaliah, a man of God, which was by the chamber of the princes, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, the keeper of the door:

5And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups, and I said unto them, Drink ye wine.

6But they said, We will drink no wine: for Jonadab the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, Ye shall drink no wine, neither ye, nor your sons for ever:

7Neither shall ye build house, nor sow seed, nor plant vineyard, nor have any: but all your days ye shall dwell in tents; that ye may live many days in the land where ye be strangers.

8Thus have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab our father in all that he hath charged us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, nor our daughters;

9Nor to build houses for us to dwell in: neither have we vineyard, nor field, nor seed:

10But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.

Key Verse: “But we have dwelt in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.” Jeremiah 35:10

Message

Jacob was always ashamed of letting his classmates know that he loves Jesus. When asked some questions on Christian dressing and godly lifestyle, he was not always sure of what to say. Christians have some important lessons to learn from the Rechabites. The children of Rechab had been given some specific instructions by their forefather. This instruction had been passed down from one generation to another. In spite of the changes around them, they did not turn away from the instructions.

In this chapter, God instructed Jeremiah the prophet to go and tell them to drink wine which was one of the major things they had been instructed never to do. In spite of the status of the prophet, they told him that they cannot obey his instructions. God praised them for their obedience. This is to show us that children of God do not have any excuse to disobey His instructions irrespective of the object of temptation. The temptation could come from uncles, aunties, teachers, parents, popular preachers or anyone you are familiar with. Obeying them by yielding to sin is a direct disobedience to God. You must learn to say no to sin and yes to Jesus.

Prayer for today: O Lord, please help me to obey you in all circumstances.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
