BIBLE TEXT: 1 SAMUEL 17:32-40
33 And Saul said to David, Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth.
34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father’s sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:
35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.
36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.
37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.
38 And Saul armed David with his armour, and he put an helmet of brass upon his head; also he armed him with a coat of mail.
39 And David girded his sword upon his armour, and he assayed to go; for he had not proved it. And David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.
40 And he took his staff in his hand, and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook, and put them in a shepherd’s bag which he had, even in a scrip; and his sling was in his hand: and he drew near to the Philistine.
MEMORY VERSE: “And David said to Saul, Let no man’s heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine” (1 SAMUEL 17:32).
MESSAGE
“Passion is a feeling of intense enthusiasm towards or compelling desire for someone or something. Passion can range from strong interest in or admiration for an idea, proposal, or cause; to enthusiastic enjoyment of an interest or activity; to strong attraction, excitement, or emotion towards a person” (Wikipedia). The definition of passion as postulated in Wikipedia vividly captured the mood of David when he was to face one of the most difficult challenges in the national life of Israel.
Goliath had held the nation by the throat and was threatening to exterminate it. However, David, propelled by passion, a strong emotional state of resilience, was not deterred by the size and military might of Goliath, a Philistine who accumulated a lot of military laurels for himself.
Life is full of challenges that could easily overwhelm us, but passion will bring out the potentials that are latent in us to deal with them. Are you overwhelmed by the challenges you are facing in your studies, spiritual and family life? Like David, let passion push out the potentials in you to overcome every challenge.
QUOTE: Bring out the potentials.
CHALLENGE: Face your Goliath.
PRAYER: Lord, help me to overcome my Goliaths.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
