DCLM Higher Everyday 10 November 2024 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Respect Your Parents
Topic: Respect Your Parents
Text: Ephesians 6:1-2
1Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;)
Key Verse: “Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise” (Ephesians 6:2).
Message
In our world today, there is a rise in cases of children dishonouring their parents and premature death or calamity befalling young people. Neglecting the word of God is consequential, Deuteronomy 5:16 says, “Honour thy father and thy mother, as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.” It is well pleasing unto the Lord when you obey your parents. It attracts grace and blessings upon us. Proverbs 1:8-9 says, “My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother: For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.”

The Bible is very clear about our respecting our parents and by extension respecting elders in our community. Our Pastors, teachers and leaders are also our parents in the Lord and should be respected as well. Students should learn to respect their principals and teachers in the school as obedience to their godly instructions bring blessings.
Quote: Obey your parents
Challenge: Are you obeying your parents in the Lord?
Prayer for today: Lord, help me to honour my parents.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
