DCLM Higher Everyday 18 January 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Shun Worldly Pleasure
Topic: Shun Worldly Pleasure
Text: Proverbs 21: 11-17
11When the scorner is punished, the simple is made wise: and when the wise is instructed, he receiveth knowledge.
13Whoso stoppeth his ears at the cry of the poor, he also shall cry himself, but shall not be heard.
14A gift in secret pacifieth anger: and a reward in the bosom strong wrath.
15It is joy to the just to do judgment: but destruction shall be to the workers of iniquity.
16The man that wandereth out of the way of understanding shall remain in the congregation of the dead.
17He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.
Key Verse: “He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich” (Proverbs 21:17).
Message
Worldly pleasures and merriments are undeniably attractive to the human fallen nature. It has been thoroughly used by the arch enemy of our souls to lure many away from the path of righteousness and moral rectitude into sin and regrets. Worldly pleasures are often well crafted and presented in forms that allure the hearts of youths. They include gambling, drinking of alcohol, substance abuse, worldly entertainment, and unguarded affectionate relationship with the opposite gender among others.

It was the undoing of one of Israel’s most notable kings, Solomon. King Solomon’s life was full of regrets at the end due to his love for pleasures. Worldly pleasures have a very strong tendency to make the heart spiritually cold and eventually lead to backsliding. The dreams, ambitions and potentials of some youths have been aborted through worldly pleasures. Furthermore, the Scriptures warn that those given to pleasures will be poor. Shun worldly pleasures to avoid spiritual and material poverty. To overcome the allurement of worldly pleasure, yield your heart and life to Christ and intentionally say no whenever it presents itself to you.
Quote: Shun worldly pleasures
Challenge: Say no to worldly pleasures.
Prayer for today: God, help me to resist and shun worldly pleasures, in Jesus’ name.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
