DCLM Higher Everyday 23 September 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Sources Of Grief And Sorrow

Topic: Sources Of Grief And Sorrow

Text:  Luke 7:11-17

11And it came to pass the day after, that he went into a city called Nain; and many of his disciples went with him, and much people.

12Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her.

13And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her, and said unto her, Weep not.

14And he came and touched the bier: and they that bare him stood still. And he said, Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.

15And he that was dead sat up, and began to speak. And he delivered him to his mother.

16And there came a fear on all: and they glorified God, saying, That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited his people.

17And this rumour of him went forth throughout all Judaea, and throughout all the region round about.

Key Verse: “Now when he came nigh to the gate of the city, behold, there was a dead man carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow: and much people of the city was with her” (Luke7:12).

Message

According to Psychology Today, “the acute pain that accompanies loss” is called grief. Sorrow is defined as “a profoundly distressing feeling brought on by a loss, disappointment, or other misfortune that oneself or others suffer.” Grief might result from losing a loved one, ending a relationship, experiencing a health decline, and so on. It is obvious from our text that grief and sorrow are twin sisters that one cannot escape from in one’s lifetime. As a Christian the actions of your unbelieving peers and teachers in the school towards you because of your faith can cause sorrow and grief in your heart.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
