35Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

36Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

37But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Key Verse: “But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God’s throne.” Matthew 5:34

Message

Goodluck was playing with his friends in the compound where they reside. Afterward, it was discovered that he had broken the glass cup in the house. Immediately his elder brother confronted him, he began to swear in the name of God that he didn’t do it.

Some children are in the habit of swearing at every slightest opportunity in a bid to deny their evil deeds. This does not make God happy. Jesus Christ clearly warns that you are not to swear at all, neither by heaven or by earth. This is the standard required of us as friends of Jesus. You do not need to convince someone of telling the truth by swearing. If you are in the habit of always swearing, you are in danger of hell fire. Do not be like the young boy in our story who was quick to swear that he was not the one that broke the glass cup while in actual sense he did it.

You must resist every pressure to swear by God or any creature or thing. Always speak the truth even if you are going to be punished. The physical punishment in this world cannot be compared with the suffering in hell. Repent from this habit and tell Jesus to give you a clean heart and you shall be free.

Prayer for today: I repent from every form of swearing and promise Jesus never to be involved in such.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
