DCLM Higher Everyday 28 January 2026 — Tame That Little Member

DCLM Higher Everyday 28 January 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Your True Identity In Christ

Topic: Tame That Little Member

Text: James 3:1-10

1My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.

2For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.

3Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.

4Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.

5Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

6And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

7For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:

8But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

9Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.

10Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Key Verse: “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth” (James 3:5)!

Message

Imagine having to share your home with a lion, a cobra, a grizzly bear, and a grumpy pit bull; who would not be daily terrified? You can imagine the turmoil in a house like that – right? That is the kind of turmoil the tongues of the unregenerate youths can create at home, school and neighbourhood. Today’s text reveals the ingenuity of man in subduing the planet, bringing animals, irrespective of their sizes under control, controlling enormous water vessels, taking charge of outer space to monitor events on earth, yet being unable to tame the tongue despite its littleness.

However, believers in Christ through the grace of God in their lives can tame the tongue and promote peaceful coexistence in their home, school and neighbourhood.  Be mindful of your words, they can either heal or hurt with lasting effects. The tongue has no bones, but strong enough to break a heart. So, be careful with your words. The tongue can be used positively through preaching of the gospel, counselling and singing to edify the body of Christ.

Quote: Be careful with your words

Challenge: The tongue can break a heart.

Prayer for today: Lord, cleanse my heart and let my tongue speak soothing words.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
