DCLM Daily Manna 19 October 2024 — The Lord, Our Shield
DCLM Daily Manna 19 October 2024 Devotional By Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — The Lord, Our Shield
TOPIC: The Lord, Our Shield (DCLM Daily Manna 18 October 2024)
KEY VERSE: “Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence” – Psalm 59:9
TEXT: Psalms 59:1-11 (KJV)
1 Deliver me from mine enemies, O my God: defend me from them that rise up against me.
2 Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from bloody men.
3 For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul: the mighty are gathered against me; not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Lord.
4 They run and prepare themselves without my fault: awake to help me, and behold.
5 Thou therefore, O Lord God of hosts, the God of Israel, awake to visit all the heathen: be not merciful to any wicked transgressors. Selah.
6 They return at evening: they make a noise like a dog, and go round about the city.
7 Behold, they belch out with their mouth: swords are in their lips: for who, say they, doth hear?
8 But thou, O Lord, shalt laugh at them; thou shalt have all the heathen in derision.
9 Because of his strength will I wait upon thee: for God is my defence.
10 The God of my mercy shall prevent me: God shall let me see my desire upon mine enemies.
11 Slay them not, lest my people forget: scatter them by thy power; and bring them down, O Lord our shield.
DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:
The Scripture describes the world as lying in wickedness, indicating that evil people who portray themselves as enemies come in different forms. Being a believer, living godly and harmless as doves does not exclude you from the virulence of wicked people in the world since Jesus Himself forewarned us that, “ye shall be hated of all men for my name’s sake.” We are, however, confident of the shield in the almighty God, who is greater than the greatest tormentor or oppressor.

The title of this Psalm reminds us of David’s situation when King Saul sent soldiers to watch his house so he could arrest and execute him (1 Samuel 19:11-18). He was a target for destruction by Saul, whom he served with loyalty. The wickedness in Saul’s heart arising from his loss of fellowship with God made him plot the murder of innocent David. The Lord raised helpers for him in the house of his enemies to indicate there is no need to fear the wrath of those who seek to harm us.
Our attitude as believers when faced with blatant hatred by the wicked is not to repay them with evil, but to look up to God in prayer for protection from their evil plots. Prayer is the believer’s weapon for protection and victory from the machinations of the wicked. Prayers that God should kill our enemies contradict the teachings of Christ. He taught us to pray for our enemies and not to curse them.
You cannot overcome the wickedness of this world with carnal weapons because, “…by strength shall no man prevail”. In fact, David confessed that he would wait on God because of the strength of the enemy which, though may be enormous, yet cannot overwhelm Him.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Taking refuge under God not only hides you, but also conquers for you.

1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
