DCLM Sincere Milk 10 December 2022 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — The Sabbath
TOPIC: THE SABBATH
TEXT: NUMBERS 15:32-36
33And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.
34And they put him in ward, because it was not declared what should be done to him.
35And the LORD said unto Moses, The man shall be surely put to death: all the congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.
36And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Key Verse: “And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man that gathered sticks upon the sabbath day” (Numbers 15:32).
MESSAGE:
God created the heaven and the earth and everything in just six days. On the seventh day, He rested. He did not rest because He was tired, but to show us, His creatures, the necessity of being orderly in our day-to-day activities. We also learnt through this experience that there is time for everything. Time to work and time to rest. We are not expected to work at the time of rest, so that our body can be refreshed and ready to work again.
The Sabbath was instituted by God as a natural order of how things should work. During the wilderness journey, God gave the children of Israel rules to guide them. One of such rules was the observance of the Sabbath Day (Saturday) as a period of rest. The rule was so strict that anyone who disobeyed would be stoned to death.
Today, the Christian’s day of rest (Sabbath) is Sunday. It is a day to rest from all physical labour so as to have time to worship God and fellowship with one another. The Bible encourages us that we should not forsake the assembly of the brethren. Although the death penalty for breaking the Sabbath may no longer apply to us, yet anyone who constantly misses fellowship will surely die spiritually.
It is not good to miss fellowship, because through it we get to learn the word of God that will make us to grow and prepare for heaven. Make up your mind to always be in the fellowship with other friends of Jesus.
Prayer: Lord, give me grace to obey Your word.
Further Reading: Hebrews 10:23-29
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
