TOPIC: THE WISE VIRGINS
TEXT: MATTHEW 25:1-7
2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them:
4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps.
5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept.
6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him.
7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
MEMORY VERSE: “They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps” (MATTHEW 25:3, 4).
MESSAGE:
When John Wesley was asked what he would do if he knew his Lord would return at that time the next day. He said in effect, “I would go to bed and go to sleep; wake up in the morning, and go on with my work, for I would want Him to find me doing what He had appointed.”
This parable in our text is about believers’ preparedness for the coming of the Bridegroom. The preparedness/unpreparedness of the ten virgins indicates that a large number of believers will be taken unawares. Christ will not wait for the whole Church to be ready before making His appearance.

Jesus said that the wise are those who listen to and follow His teachings (Matthew 7:24-29). Like the five wise virgins, we need to be prepared lest we miss going with the Bridegroom and our possible rewards.
As a believer, take care of your own spiritual welfare and persevere in faith as the time of Christ’s coming is unknown. Sinners can be prepared by being saved from sin, and having genuine personal faith in Christ.
QUOTE: Take care of your own spiritual welfare.
CHALLENGE: Jesus Christ could return tonight or tomorrow. Are you ready?
PRAYER: Oh God, give me the grace to persevere till Christ’s coming.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
