DCLM Higher Everyday 7 October 2023 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Try And Try Again
Topic: Try And Try Again
Text: Genesis 26: 16-22
16And Abimelech said unto Isaac, Go from us; for thou art much mightier than we.
17And Isaac departed thence, and pitched his tent in the valley of Gerar, and dwelt there.
18And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the Philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them.
19And Isaac’s servants digged in the valley, and found there a well of springing water.
20And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him.
21And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
22And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, For now the LORD hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land.
Key Verse: “And Isaac digged again the wells of water, which they had digged in the days of Abraham his father; for the philistines had stopped them after the death of Abraham: and he called their names after the names by which his father had called them” (Genesis 26:18).
Message
Robert Bruce was crowned king of Scotland on March 27th in 1306. He was however deposed in 1307 by king Edward of England. Bruce was forced to flee to the little island of Rathlin. While there, he continued to recruit followers and in less than two years, he liberated Scotland from the British. He again defeated the British army in a popular battle of Bennockburn which led to the independence of Scotland in 1328. His Popular quotation was, “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try and try again.”
Our text focuses on the self-determination of Isaac despite all odds in his way to progress. He dug the wells, again and again. The wells sprang up water but the Philistines continued to strive with him to possess them. Through persistence, he dug another which was not striven for and named it Rehoboth. To climb through the ladder of success in life, one requires perseverance and determination for there will be difficulties in your way. The breakthrough will come through diligence, prayer and faith in God.
Quote: The breakthrough will come
Challenge: Defeat is a signal to try harder.
Prayer for today: Father, help me to persevere to success.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
