Topic: Watch Your Tongue!
Text: 1 Kings 13:7-10, 20-24
8And the man of God said unto the king, If thou wilt give me half thine house, I will not go in with thee, neither will I eat bread nor drink water in this place:
9For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.
10So he went another way, and returned not by the way that he came to Bethel.
20And it came to pass, as they sat at the table, that the word of the LORD came unto the prophet that brought him back:
21And he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD, Forasmuch as thou hast disobeyed the mouth of the LORD, and hast not kept the commandment which the LORD thy God commanded thee,
22But camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place, of the which the LORD did say to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy carcase shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.
23And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, to wit, for the prophet whom he had brought back.
24And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his carcase was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it, the lion also stood by the carcase.
Key Verse: “For so was it charged me by the word of the LORD, saying, Eat no bread, nor drink water, nor turn again by the same way that thou camest.” 1 Kings 13:9
Message
The young prophet in our Bible passage had been used of God to prophesy against the evil altar in the land as well as to pray for the restoration of the king’s withered hand. This made his story go round the cities. Unfortunately, this young prophet could not control his tongue. He told the king and everyone who cared to listen the secret he was meant to keep for his safe return home. He forgot he was still within the enemy’s territory and as such should not be careless.
The ‘great’ young prophet was later deceived into disobeying God and ended up being killed by a lion, what a tragedy! Many boys and girls today are loose with their tongues. They reveal personal and confidential information about themselves, friends and families to people they don’t know on the social media platforms.
Some even go as far as sending pictures, home address, parent’s workplace etc. to people they barely know. This should be checked. Though God’s protection is sure, we should not be careless. Don’t be a talkative!

Prayer for today: Lord, please set a watch over my mouth and don’t allow the enemy catch me through my words.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
