DCLM Higher Everyday 22 August 2023 — Woes From Wine

DCLM Higher Everyday  22 August 2023 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Woes From Wine

Topic: Woes From Wine

Text: Proverbs 23:29-35

29Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

30They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

31Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.

32At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

33Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.

34Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

35They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.

Key Verse: “Who hath woe? Who hath sorrow? Who hath contentions? Who hath babbling? Who hath wounds without cause? Who hath redness of eyes” (Proverbs 23:29).

Message

“Alcohol is a very effective dissolving agent. It dissolves families, marriages, friendship, jobs…but never problems,” someone wisely declared. This quote corroborates the scripture in our memory verse, which itemizes all the woes that people heap upon themselves just by alcohol intake. Despite warnings by secular, as well as religious organisations about the health and other hazards traceable to alcohol, its consumption, particularly amongst young people, is not abating. Cliff Cole lent his voice to the warnings against alcohol when he opined that, “Balanced judgment will certify that intoxicating liquor leaves an unbalanced budget, unbalanced men and women, an unbalanced home and an unbalanced social order.”

No one in his right mind would want to put poison in his brain. But that is what alcohol is – a poison. Coerced by peer pressure and blinded by sin, many young people resort to alcohol for entertainment, to escape depression, ease tension or just to acquire courage for a criminal act. But they end up attracting greater evils upon themselves. Don’t wait until it is too late. Jesus can set you free.

Quote: Jesus can set you free

Challenge: Flee alcohol, flee woes!

Prayer for today: Deliver me, Lord, from the snares of alcoholism.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
