TOPIC: RESPECT FOR ELDERS
TEXT: 2 KINGS 2:23-25
23 And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
25 And he went from thence to mount Carmel, and from thence he returned to Samaria.
MEMORY VERSE: “For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death”MATTHEW 15:4).
MESSAGE:
It is said of a very prominent rich man in Nigeria how he respectfully gave up his seat with that of his assistant to a man of God who needed it desperately in an aircraft even though he was from another religion. This little act of kind gesture is believed to be the very foundation and secret of his wealth today in line with the prophecy of the man of God.
Honouring father and mother as the scriptures commands is not limited to your biological or spiritual parents; it concerns all elders. Our Lord expects us to show respect for all elders to prove we are His children.
Many youths today have missed great opportunities because of disrespect for elders. Greeting elders, helping them to carry their loads, standing up for them to take your seat in public vehicles and more, are all forms of respect that is needed from a growing youth.
As you go out today, remember the Lord is expecting you to show elders around you respect as a sign that you are His own and different from wayward children.
QUOTE: Our Lord expects us to show respect.
CHALLENGE: It pays to respect parents.
PRAYER: Lord, help me not to despise elders in any way.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
