Topic: Focus On Your Priorities
Text: Luke 10:38-42
38Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.
39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.
40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.
41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:
42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.
Key Verse: “And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things” (Luke 10:41).
Message
The case of Martha is very common to many youths. Another way to describe this kind of situation is majoring on minor things. Martha thought that she was being hospitable by being busy trying to prepare something for Christ to eat and drink. However, Christ told her to stop majoring on minor things. In other words, studying God’s Word is more important than food. Matthew Henry said, “The laying up of God’s oracles in our hearts will be of excellent use to us in all our conduct.”
A young man once told his parents that he would not go to the university until he got married. In as much as marriage is good, it should not come before education and career. The wise king Solomon said, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven” (Ecclesiastes 3:1). Jesus in this story is telling youths to stop focusing on what may be important but not urgent and begin to focus on what is both important and urgent. As for Martha’s matter, the Word comes before food.
Quote: The Word comes before food
Challenge: Tackle first the important and urgent.
Prayer for today: Help me, Lord, to do the needful, in Jesus’ name. Amen!
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
