Topic: Sorrowful Laughter

Text: Proverbs 14:11-13

11The house of the wicked shall be overthrown: but the tabernacle of the upright shall flourish.

12There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

13Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.

Key Verse: “Even in laughter the heart is sorrowful; and the end of that mirth is heaviness.” Proverbs 14:13

Message

Everyone loves to laugh and be merry. Even doctors, Esometimes, advise some sick people to find ways to laugh frequently. They say this helps to relieve pain and cause the sick to recover quickly. Laughter reduces stress, boosts mood, triggers healthy changes in the body. It relieves from fear, worry and anxiety. Do you know that some people pay so much money to laugh? There is what is called “Entertainment Industry”. What those involved claim to do, primarily, is to make people laugh and be happy. Comedians or jesters make funny comments, sometimes ungodly remarks, so that people can laugh and pay them money. Some people say by such laughter they get relieved from their burdens and sorrows. But how terrible it is when people try to laugh the guilt of their sins away. They go in search of laughter to ignore God, cover the evil they have done and silence their consciences. Yet, that mirth (fun, laughter) is heaviness (emptiness). But their heaviness returns when the laughter ends.

You can never find true and lasting happiness in what the Bible may refer to as “sorrowful laughter”. No matter how you laugh, you cannot laugh the shame and guilt of your bad doings away. Repent from your sins and you will find true happiness in Christ.

Prayer for today: It is freedom from sins that gives true happiness. Lord, help me to keep myself pure.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
