DCLM Higher Everyday 20 August 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Who You Walk With Matters

Topic: Who You Walk With Matters

Text:  Proverbs 13:19-21

19The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil.

20He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed.

21Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed.

Key Verse: “He that walketh with wise men, shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed” (Proverbs 13:20).

Message

The word “walk” signifies a close relationship where two parties in agreement intentionally spend time doing things together. They are on a journey and have a common destination. According to Amos 3:3 “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” Therefore, it takes two to form a friendship. Who you walk with determines what works for you; who you company with determines what accompanies you. Associating with people could bring about one of the two-sided coin effects.

Getting along with the right people will bring support, encouragement, networking, personal development and happiness. While a toxic and negative relationship can cause you backwardness, distraction and derailment from your life’s purpose. Abraham got to the point where he decided to do away with wrong company. Friends, neighbours or even relatives whose goal is to distract you from your divine purpose should be avoided as quickly as possible. Dear youth, choose your friends carefully so that you can succeed in your academics and in life in general. Jesus is the most dependable Friend you need to walk with for you to succeed in life.

Quote: Jesus, is the most dependable Friend

Challenge: Bad friendship breeds corruption.

Prayer for today: Lord, hold my hands and help me to trust you more.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
