DCLM Higher Everyday 30 August 2025 — Unbelief Leads To Backsliding
DCLM Higher Everyday 30 August 2025 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Unbelief Leads To Backsliding
Topic: Unbelief Leads To Backsliding
Text: Hebrews 3:7-13
7Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
8Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
9When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
10Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
11So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
12Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.
13But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.
Key Verse: “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God” (Hebrews 3:12).
Message
Our text warns believers of the root cause of backsliding. Backsliding begins with unbelief in the heart of someone who was once fervent in the things of God. Unbelief brought about backsliding of the children of Israel after their deliverance from slavery and the mighty miracles the Lord performed before their eyes. They despised the great deliverance of God and began to recount the so-called comforts they had in Egypt and severally desired to return there. They murmured against God and Moses at every moment of their trying time, thereby provoking God.

The situation is still the same today as many youths are backsliding from the faith because of lack of faith in God’s unchanging promises. Many young people engage in examination malpractices because they do not believe that God can help them to excel in their examinations. Examine yourself and be sure there is no seed of unbelief in you. If you find such, repent and pray, “…Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief” (Mark 9:24). Also study God’s word regularly to grow in faith.
Quote: Be sure there is no seed of unbelief in you
Challenge: Be sure there is no seed of unbelief in you
Prayer for today: Help me Lord to overcome unbelief in my life.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
