DCLM Higher Everyday 12 January 2026 — Self-Scrutiny
DCLM Higher Everyday 12 January 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Self-Scrutiny
Topic: Self-Scrutiny
Text: 2 Corinthians 13:1-8
1This is the third time I am coming to you. In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established.
3Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me, which to you-ward is not weak, but is mighty in you.
4For though he was crucified through weakness, yet he liveth by the power of God. For we also are weak in him, but we shall live with him by the power of God toward you.
5Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates?
6But I trust that ye shall know that we are not reprobates.
7Now I pray to God that ye do no evil; not that we should appear approved, but that ye should do that which is honest, though we be as reprobates.
8For we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth.
Key Verse: “Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith; prove your own selves. Know ye not your own selves, how that Jesus Christ is in you, except ye be reprobates” (2 Corinthians 13:5)?
Message
Self-Scrutiny can also be called self-examination, self-evaluation, self-reflection or self-searching. It is an act of examining one’s own thoughts and feeling to better understand who one is. Self-searching can only be carried out by an individual who is humble and willing to obey God. Self-evaluation helps us to identify weaknesses in our lives in order to help us to make necessary adjustments and also strengthen positive traits. Self-evaluation makes one to admit wrongs and to correct bad behaviour. Thus, self-evaluation leads to improved quality of Christian life.

Some youths are proud and incorrigible and find it difficult to take correction or to check themselves, thereby leading to their failure and in some cases, early grave. The act of self-scrutiny is a determinant of meekness which is a fruit of the Spirit. To obtain the fruit of the Spirit, one must come to the Master of life who is Christ Jesus. Come to Jesus, accept your sinfulness and repent so that He can cleanse you of all lust and pride to make you grow through daily self-scrutiny.
Quote: Self-Scrutiny leads to improved quality of Christian life
Challenge: Examine yourself regularly.
Prayer for today: Dear Lord, help me to daily examine myself.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
