DCLM Higher Everyday 1 March 2026 — The First And Great Commandment

DCLM Higher Everyday 1 March 2026 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — The First And Great Commandment

Topic: The First And Great Commandment

Text: Matthew 22:37-40

37Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38This is the first and great commandment.

39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Key Verse: On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matthew 22:40).

Message

Commandments are divine rules that guide our interactions and set boundaries for our relationships with God and others. Jesus emphasizes that loving God is the greatest commandment of all. This is because God is love and demonstrates His undying love to humanity above all His creations in a unique manner.  Have you ever wondered why loving God supremely is so important? The answer lies in the fact that when you love God with all your heart, soul, and mind, you’ll exalt Him above all else, obey His instructions, and live righteously in this present evil world. God also expects man to love Him supremely and place Him above everything else.

God still expects us to love our neighbours as we love ourselves. Loving our neighbours shows that the seed of love God deposited in us when we got born again is alive. For you to love God and fellow men acceptably, you need to surrender your heart to Jesus’ cleansing power, which brings genuine salvation from sin. Then, deliberately make up your mind to obey God’s Word at all times.

Quote: Place Him above everything else

Challenge: What percentage of your love belongs to God?

Prayer for today: Lord, please help me to love You above all else, in Jesus’ name.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
