7Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
KEY VERSE: Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).
Message
In medical practice, or surgical procedures human beings are ready to surrender needed information requested by the doctor during consultation. Furthermore, on the theatre bed, patients do not struggle with the surgeons, rather, they willingly yield any part of their body for physical examination or procedure. This is based on the trust that the patient will benefit from the consultation/procedure.
In today’s text, the apostle gives the true cause of contentions and strife and cautions against intemperance, covetousness, pride, and overconfidence. Apostle James encourages all to submit to God and resist the devil. He also promises that if we resist the devil, he will flee from us. Just as the patients yield to the advice and instructions of the doctor, so must every Christian give total surrender to God in all aspects of their lives. Romans 12:1-2 further explains the manner in which we are to relate with God as our Father and Creator. God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Everyone, including youths, should submit their hearts to Jesus and trust Him to exalt them.
PRAYER FOR TODAY
Oh Lord, give me the grace to always resist the devil.
CHALLENGE
The highest life is the one lived for Christ.
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
