TEXT: Matthew 13:24-30 (KJV)
24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:
25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.
26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?
28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.
30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:
Thomas Jefferson is often credited with the quote: “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” England was almost paying a heavy price for non-vigilance, laxity and complacency in the middle of the second world war because of the false impression being created by many that the war was all but won owing to the partial success on land. It was called “the optimistic nuisance.” Recruiting fell off and many became lax. To ensure they secured victory and liberty from the looming slavery that might come if the Nazis overran England, the department of state had to issue grave warnings to checkmate the erroneous impression that the war was drawing to a victorious end.

In this passage, Christ’s warning cannot but be timely to believers as the world enters a frightening phase in its race to the end of this age. Believers that wish to run the race successfully to the end without sustaining any injury or falling prey to the adversary need be wary of the enemy’s ploy to make them relapse into self-indulgence and unprofitable ‘rest’ along the way. Good seeds were sown by this man in his own field but he was not vigilant enough. He must have gone home to take a little rest after the rigorous exercise of cultivating the land and planting good seeds. Unfortunately for him, the enemy came at a period he was prone to fatigue, weakness, weariness and vulnerable to attack.
God’s children are engaged in an incessant warfare. Our adversary, the devil, is an implacable foe. In our warfare, no armistice can be declared. Believers must not cease to be watchful and wakeful. The songwriter, Charlotte Elliott (1789-1871), couches the warning: Christian, seek not yet repose, Hear thy gracious Savior say; Thou art in the midst of foes: Watch and pray.

Believers must be on guard day and night against the tares of the wicked being sown during the slumbering hours and carefree moments of relaxation, especially after spiritual exploits. The enemy is relentlessly looking for such opportunities to perpetrate his mischievous acts. You are the one to stay awake and watch over your life, family and territory. With Christ, victory is guaranteed!

1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
