DCLM Daily Manna 13 September 2021 — Excess Provision In Famine

TOPIC: Excess Provision In Famine (DCLM Daily Manna 13 September 2021)

TEXT: 2 Kings 4:38-44

38 And Elisha came again to Gilgal: and there was a dearth in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him: and he said unto his servant, Set on the great pot, and seethe pottage for the sons of the prophets.

39 And one went out into the field to gather herbs, and found a wild vine, and gathered thereof wild gourds his lap full, and came and shred them into the pot of pottage: for they knew them not.

40 So they poured out for the men to eat. And it came to pass, as they were eating of the pottage, that they cried out, and said, O thou man of God, there is death in the pot. And they could not eat thereof.

41 But he said, Then bring meal. And he cast it into the pot; and he said, Pour out for the people, that they may eat. And there was no harm in the pot.

42 And there came a man from Baalshalisha, and brought the man of God bread of the firstfruits, twenty loaves of barley, and full ears of corn in the husk thereof. And he said, Give unto the people, that they may eat.

43 And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the Lord, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof.

44 So he set it before them, and they did eat, and left thereof, according to the word of the Lord.

KEY VERSE: “And his servitor said, What, should I set this before an hundred men? He said again, Give the people, that they may eat: for thus saith the LORD, They shall eat, and shall leave thereof” (2 KINGS 4:43).

MESSAGE:

Elisha the prophet had just returned from his sojourn at the home of the Shunammite woman to the school of young prophets located in Gilgal. There was famine in the land. As he catered for the spiritual needs of the budding prophets by teaching them God’s precepts and laws, he was equally concerned about their physical needs. He instructed his servant to prepare pottage for them. In the course of making the food, an unnamed gatherer of herbs shredded into the pot of pottage some poisonous wild vine. This caused the eaters instant stomach pains. They cried out to the prophet, who with a meal (flour) tossed into the death pot removed the poison.

The prophet, on another day, received a visitor who brought him twenty loaves of barley and full ears of corn. He instructed that the twenty loaves be given to the young prophets to eat but the servant complained that it was inadequate for a hundred people. Miraculously, the people ate and had some leftovers, according to the word of the Lord through the prophet.

We must be rest assured that God is interested in our overall well-being and makes necessary provision for us even in difficult times. Care must be taken, however, as to how we seek solutions to our pressing needs.

God’s intervention through Elisha shows that He is able to turn our situations around from bad to good once we trust Him. He will send us the needed help at the right time. He is never late. He will supply enough and we will have surplus. But remember to think beyond material things. If all you crave for is earthly progress without heavenly blessings of salvation and sanctification, you will miss all. We must have all that God has provided – spiritual, physical and eternity with Christ.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
God’s provision is inexhaustible.

THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
