TOPIC: Accept God’s Help (DCLM Daily Manna 13 March 2022)
TEXT: Isaiah 8:1-8 (KJV)
8 Moreover the Lord said unto me, Take thee a great roll, and write in it with a man’s pen concerning Mahershalalhashbaz.
2 And I took unto me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.
3 And I went unto the prophetess; and she conceived, and bare a son. Then said the Lord to me, Call his name Mahershalalhashbaz.
4 For before the child shall have knowledge to cry, My father, and my mother, the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be taken away before the king of Assyria.
5 The Lord spake also unto me again, saying,
6 Forasmuch as this people refuseth the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoice in Rezin and Remaliah’s son;
7 Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks:
8 And he shall pass through Judah; he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck; and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel.
KEY VERSE: “Now therefore, behold, the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks” (Isaiah 8:7).
MESSAGE:
King Ahaz of Judah in the days of Isaiah the prophet did not draw lasting lessons from the English proverb, ‘A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush’. He had the omnipotent God to lean on when trouble came. His predecessors like Asa and Jehoshaphat ran to God for deliverance, held on firmly to Him, refusing to exchange Him for foreign powers.

But Ahaz turned to the lords of Assyria when some countries schemed to war against Judah. God is not happy when His children do not take advantage of His provision. They pay dearly for such act of faithlessness. God told the king of Judah that because he trusted in another power other than His, He would let a mighty army invade the land. The Lord used the imagery of the strong tide of floods to describe the impending invasion.
Judah had rejected the home-grown security offered by Jehovah in Jerusalem, namely, the “waters of Shiloah that go softly”. So, now, “the Lord bringeth up upon them the waters of the river, strong and many, even the king of Assyria, and all his glory: and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks…he shall overflow and go over, he shall reach even to the neck.” Since Judah did not settle for peace, which comes by trusting God, it would have the other side of the coin for keeping the company of idolatrous kings.
God’s people must be salt and light to others in the world. We must not be seen in confederacy with those alien to the ways of the Kingdom when challenges confront us.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY:
Resist every temptation to seek help outside Christ.
THE BIBLE IN ONE YEAR:
Jeremiah 25-27

1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
