DCLM Daily Manna 30 September 2023 Devotional by Pastor W. F. Kumuyi — Authority Of Jesus

TOPIC: Authority Of Jesus (DCLM Daily Manna 30 September 2023)

KEY VERSE: “And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?” (Mark 11:28).

TEXT: Mark 11:27-33 (KJV)

27 And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders,

28 And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?

29 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.

30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.

31 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?

32 But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.

33 And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

DCLM Daily Manna For Today MESSAGE:

Oscar Wilde, the famous author, was once quoted as saying, “Wherever there is a man who exercises authority, there is a man who resists authority”. His observation proved true in our passage for reading today. The religious leaders found Jesus exercising authority in Jerusalem, and did not like it.

Contrary to the expectation of the chief priests and the Pharisees, Jesus had become a popular leader in Jewry. The miracles He performed were legendary and His sermons and teachings were unparalleled. He had simplified His messages through the use of parables, so that the people “were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak” (Mark 7:37). He had earlier cleansed the temple and pronounced a curse on the fig tree. He did not belong to any previous school of thought; no known Rabbi associated with Him; yet, He was doing wonders by the day.

By asking for the authority of Jesus, the chief priests and others were actually looking for an opportunity to trap Him. He did not fall into their temptation. Instead, He asked them questions they could not answer. When they failed to answer His question concerning the authority of John, He refused to tell them the source of His own authority too.

Many ignorant individuals are still querying the authority of Jesus today. At a time when fear or worries made John the Baptist to waver on his earlier confession of Jesus, the Lord sent a simple message back to him to affirm His authority in Luke 7:22. That is the authority of Jesus; and what He did for others, He will do for you too, if you ask for His help.

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
The Lordship of Jesus over all is not in dispute — it is settled.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
