Text: Genesis 37:1-8

1And Jacob dwelt in the land wherein his father was a stranger, in the land of Canaan.

2These are the generations of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brethren; and the lad was with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father’s wives: and Joseph brought unto his father their evil report.

3Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

4And when his brethren saw that their father loved him more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him.

5And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it his brethren: and they hated him yet the more.

6And he said unto them, Hear, I pray you, this dream which I have dreamed:

7For, behold, we were binding sheaves in the field, and, lo, my sheaf arose, and also stood upright; and, behold, your sheaves stood round about, and made obeisance to my sheaf.

8And his brethren said to him, Shalt thou indeed reign over us? or shalt thou indeed have dominion over us? And they hated him yet the more for his dreams, and for his words.

Key Verse: “Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.” Genesis 37:3

Message

Joseph was born when his mother Rachel had almost given up hope of ever having a child. She named him Joseph meaning, “The Lord shall add to me another son.” His father’s name is Jacob also known as Israel, he was his eleventh son. After the birth of Joseph, Jacob returned with his family to the land of Canaan. Rachel died there while giving birth to her second son whom Jacob named Benjamin.

Jacob loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, and when the boy became seventeen years old, he gave him a beautiful coat of many colours. This gift made his brothers jealous and envious. They decided to sell him to slavery and to the prison. It was a tough time for Joseph. There’s no way that Joseph could have imagined what God had planned for him. He had hints though, but those dreams about bowing stars and bowing sheaves of grain only led to him being sold into slavery.

Sitting in jail, how could Joseph have known that he would be Pharaoh’s right-hand man in just a few years. The main architect in Joseph’s story is God. Even though, throughout Joseph’s life, he was surrounded by evil people, God watched over him for good purpose. Joseph, throughout his life’s challenges remained.

GOSPEL REALM: STEPS TO SALVATION
1. Admit that you are a sinner. "For all [humans] have sinned, and comes short of the glory of God....[and] the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord" (Romans 3:23)
2. Repent now. "Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out ...[for] if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness " (Acts 3:19, 1 John 1:9)
3. Believe that God loves you and Jesus died for you. "God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet Sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8)
4. Invite Jesus into your life through prayer of faith. Jesus says, "Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me" (Revelation 3:20)
